Thoughts On Directories As A Form Of Internet Marketing

The most tedious form of marketing today is directory submission. Sifting through the thousands trying to find the ones which are not only free, but also worth submitting to can be quite a daunting task. If you spend time in webmaster forums such as v7n you will find a great amount of fights between webmasters that dispute the actual use of submitting to these websites. Personally I have done some research and find submitting to directories quite useful since Google is continuously crawling these sites and with the internal and external link structures directories also usually hold a tremendous amount of authority. I do understand that the authority and page rank are quite diluted because of the overwhelming outgoing links, but it still holds true that directories hold authority and page rank and therefore should not be overlooked when trying to acquire one way links.
When submitting to directories there are many thoughts on which ones you should be submitting to. The most common theory is that you should ignore any directory without a high PR. Personally I find this a bad theory, I can understand where they are coming from when they say this. Most people think that if you submit to a low PR directory it is a waste of time, but if you think of the overwhelming ability that directories have of increasing links and increasing PR very quickly a low PR directory will probably not have a low PR for long. If you submit to a PR 0 directory who will usually let you submit free then after a year or so when the directory is PR 5 or 6 and charging everyone else for submissions you will be sitting at the top of the list already indexed. If you go to dmoz or other high PR directories and submit you will find that your site will be placed hundreds of pages down. If you were to submit to the directory when it was still a young growing site you would be on the first pages rather than deep within the directory.
Another problem with directories is they do not offer instant satisfaction which is a huge turn off for webmasters. We are use to working at the speed of light and moving up and down the SERPs daily. One thing about directories that all should know is they are 99% of the time overwhelmed and you will usually not see pay off for your efforts until after 6 months or so. You really need to give the directory owner time to index your submission and let Google find it. This takes a lot of time usually a few months before the webmaster has a chance to index the site and a few weeks before Google has a chance to find the links. Then you have to wait for Google to update all the links which usually happens once a month so don’t expect to see and change from directories until 6 months.
